Lanterns in the Night

from $280.00

Species: Mexican Gold Poppy (Eschscholzia californica ssp. mexicana)

Habitat: Desert and bajadas

Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Public Land: Organ Mountain Desert-Peaks National Monument

Description: Under the soft glow of moonlight, poppies take on an almost magical presence—petals glowing like delicate lanterns in the night. Their vibrant reds and oranges shimmer quietly in the cool air. As stars blinked and the full moon of the spring equinox rose overhead, these nocturnal blossoms seemed to hold their breath, exuding a mysterious beauty that invites stillness and wonder, enchanting anyone who pauses to see.

I took this photo while camping at Aguirre Springs Campground in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. My son and I woke up at 5am and drove down the bajada to a spot I picked out the day before. We walked along a trail made by cattle and carefully set up my camera among the closed blooms. In the dark of the early morning, a cow belted out awkward calls, likely trying to find its calf. This unnerved my son so he guarded us by holding a small boulder in hand in case the cow approached. It did not, we had a lovely time and stayed until after sunrise when the flowers opened again.

Fine art print on acid free, 100% cotton, bright or warm white, textured surface, archival quality paper. For more about papers I use click here.
