Pink Paint

from $280.00

Species: Rose Paintbrush (Castilleja sp.)

Habitat: Subalpine to Alpine Tundra

Location: Pecos Baldy Lake, New Mexico

Public Land: Santa Fe National Forest, Pecos Wilderness

Description: Rose-colored paintbrushes found in high mountain meadows are one of many wildflowers with an uncertain future as alpine regions are warming the fastest due to climate change. Two species exist in the alpine tundra of the Southwest: Castilleja haydenii and Castilleja rhexiifolia. This one is likely Castilleja haydenii but could be the other.

Most "paintbrushes" are partial parasites on other plants, their roots establishing connections with roots of other species. Roots grow until they touch the roots of other plants, frequently grasses, then penetrate the roots of these host plants, obtaining a portion of their nutrients. For this reason, they usually cannot be transplanted, and are difficult to grow from seed.

To read a lovely story about how paintbrush flowers came to be and a discussion on plant names check out my Substack post.

Fine art print on acid free, 100% cotton, bright or warm white, textured surface, archival quality paper. For more about papers I use click here.

Contact me if you are interested in combining this a Rose Paintbrush print with prints of Giant Red Paintbrush and Sulphur Paintbrush for a lovely triptych.

Please note that print sizes are the inked area, the paper is larger to provide a 1” border to accommodate matting and framing.

13 × 19 paper, 11 × 17 inked area

16 × 24 paper, 14 × 22 inked area
