Eveyone Migrates
Species: Broad-tailed Hummingbird on Parry’s Penstemon (Penstemon parryi)
Habitat: Flower: Mountain canyons; desert washes; grassland slopes
Location: Madera Canyon, Santa Rita Mountains, SE of Tucson
Public Land: Coronado National Forest
Description: The Pygmy Blue is one of the smallest butterflies in the world. A native of the Southwest from California to Texas and south to Venezuela, its found in deserts, salt marshes, and barren areas. Small by mighty, the butterfly is a world traveler. It has recently been discovered relocating to Tampa Bay, Florida and has been introduced as far away as the Persian Gulf.
I took this image while at the Festival of Cranes at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in November, 2018. The refuge is arguably one of our most important public lands in the state — providing winter habitat for thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese each year as well as water and food for migratory songbirds in spring and fall. They also have one of the few remaining populations of the endangered New Mexico Jumping Mouse and visits from the federally listed Southwest Willow Flycatcher.
Fine art print on acid free, 100% cotton, bright or warm white, textured surface, archival quality paper. For more about papers I use click here.
