Viva Las Vegas

from $280.00

Species: Englemann's hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus engelmannii)

Habitat: Rocky & brushy plains, canyons, outwash fans & hillsides

Image Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Public Land: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Description: Pink is a prominent color in Las Vegas, often associated with the city's culture and iconic landmarks from pink neon signs, pink vintage cars, pink clothing, pink hair, and pink-themed events. Englemann’s hedgehog cactus ring the city with pink blooms each spring as a reminder that in the language of flowers, pink is the color of care, compassion, and love. Viva THAT, Las Vegas.

Just 25 miles west of The Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a unique and interesting public land in that it is co-managed by a non-profit group under contract from the BLM. On one of my many cross-country treks photographing in public lands of the American Southwest, I stopped here to find a freshwater spring and came across with glowing silky pink blossoms each surrounded by four well-armed central spines. It’s costume of contradictions seemed apropos for its place next to the Vegas Strip. Engelmann's Hedgehog Cactus is one of the most common hedgehog cactus in the southwestern deserts, brightening these landscapes with its hot pink petals in the spring.

Prints: Fine art print on acid free, 100% cotton, bright or warm white, textured surface, archival quality paper. For more about papers I use click here.

Please note that print sizes are the inked area, the paper is larger to provide a 1” border to accommodate matting and framing.

13 × 19 paper, 11 × 17 inked area

16 × 24 paper, 14 × 22 inked area
